At what point might the tree/organic tech become... either symbiotic or parasitic? And how does this impact his transformation from Institute Man to Academic, so to speak?
Plus, I had an interesting semantic thought what with this being a period of science-ascendant (albeit in collapse) -- where science is the Institution = establishment, and magic is represented by an Academy - place of learning. Establishment vs education. Stasis/stagnation vs change/evolution. One is, well, death, and the other is life, to mildly paraphrase...
Of course the establishment always wants to stay in power, and the new ideas being disseminated are dangerous seeds...
