[WORLDS WORTH READING] BRIGADA
Enrique Fernández's epic fantasy project is our first graphic novel selection, plus a community book club format update.
Last week, Jonathan spoke with CHILDREN OF TIME author Adrian Tchaikovsky one on one to close out the inaugural [WORLDS WORTH READING], our community book club. If you’re a process junkie, you’re going to love it.
Today, we’re announcing our first graphic novel selection, Enrique Fernández’s BRIGADA.
BRIGADA is an epic fantasy adventure that explores war, redemption, and a mysterious mist that bridges the gaps between distant lands. The project began as an ambitious self-publishing project in 2012, with the first volume crowdfunded and released in 2013. Fernandez ran a process blog that documented the making of the series, giving readers a sneak peek at his creative approach while working outside of traditional publishing channels. With breathtaking art and an engrossing story full of big ideas, we’re excited for you to check it out.
You can buy digital copies of BRIGADA #1-3 (plus art books) directly from Enrique here, or order the hardcover collection (that contains #1-2) here.
We’ll be opening new threads throughout April over in the Substack app (join us here) to discuss the book:
These threads, much like the full Adrian Tchaikovsky conversation, will only be available to paid subscribers, so if you haven’t already:
● Exclusive Comics!
● Community Events like Live-Draws and Creator Interviews.
● Special Offers and Discounts for EMPORIA, our upcoming web store.
● Members of our highest level, THE CIRCLE, will receive a signed, deluxe hardcover edition of the [MAPS] Graphic Novel Sourcebook in print. Annual level subscribers will receive a softcover edition (Shipping not included).
Once we’re finished reading the book, we’ve got some surprises in store that we think you’re going to enjoy.
Moving forward, we’re planning to tweak the format of [WORLDS WORTH READING] to make it a little more manageable for you and us. Rather than doing two books per month, we’re going to stick to one book a month and alternate between prose novels and graphic novels. In May we’ll read our next prose selection.
If you have suggestions for future books, let us know in the comments.
‘Til then, enjoy Enrique’s gorgeous vision. We’ll have more for you to enjoy this week, and that all leads into a huge April.
This is cool and all but has there been any updates on when we’ll start getting regular 3W3M content like the Vallars book?
For a future book club pick, I'll suggest Max Gladstone's Three Parts Dead (the first book in his Craft Sequence, though it works as a standalone), if we're in the mood for interesting *unconventional* fantasy world-building. It's one of the few series that can give me the same sense of wonder I felt as a kid, when I was new to the genre and didn't know what tropes were, its imagination is so vast.
