The Fate of THE VALLARS
In your hands.
So a couple weeks back, we were asked for an update on THE VALLARS, our upcoming ongoing series with art by Jason Howard and Frank Martin. We said then, we were holding off on releasing it until we had the first full issue completed. That issue is massively oversized, with 60+ pages of sequential art, plus data pages, and our feeling was that the best possible reading experience was probably getting that all at once.
But then we started to wonder if making that decision didn’t go against the ethos of everything we’re doing here. Wouldn’t it be better to let YOU decide? After all, we want to build all this with you, and give you a voice in it. Also, maybe there’s something to be said for more serialization on a platform like this?
So we’re opening this up to a vote, exclusively for our paid subscribers.

Okay. Here are the options:
In this format, we release 3-5 pages per week. We’re big fans of how Brian K. Vaughan and Niko Henrichon have done this with Spectators, as an example. We’d still also make available full issue CBZs and PDFs when we reach those points.
The benefit here is obviously you get more comics posts from us, more frequently, hot off the press. The downside is the book isn’t really constructed to be broken up like this perfectly, so sometimes you might get a scene ending that feels abrupt (though we can do some tweaks and adjustments in lettering to minimize this).
Full Issues & Chapters
Our original plan was, as we said, to release this the first issue in full, then post a 12-15 page chapter or so each month, in a form that felt finished and complete- similar to what Tom King and Elsa Charretier do with their fantastic Love Everlasting.
The argument for this is you’re getting a full, polished work all at once. The argument against is obviously you have to wait a lot longer between installments.
So those are your choices. Vote wisely. After talking it over ourselves, we feel good either way. This is all still very new, and very much an experiment. It’ll be great to get your feedback. The poll will be open for 3 days.
Beyond that, this week we’ll be posting the next section of our [SYSTEMS] Graphic Novel Sourcebook, RELIGION, along with our full schedule for San Diego Comic Con. And next week we’ll be posting some cool stuff from the show itself, should be great.
