Today we’re back with a special process post from Jonathan, regarding SEED, the story he wrote and drew for us that saw release earlier this week.
You can read it right now, here, if you’re a paid subscriber. If you haven’t signed up yet, consider this your chance to get that story, and all the other [MAPS] Graphic Novel Sourcebook stories, plus a lot of other great stuff.
With that, here’s Jonathan…
PROBLEM SOLVING
When we were working on BLACK ARBAR, and then right after that on ACADEMY, I kind of starting working out the ‘magical storage’ system during a dormant cycle when science was ascendant.
An organic system seemed like a good place to start, and I really liked the idea of whatever it was also being tied into the environment being transformed into something inhospitable as well.
And we had all those mushrooms everywhere, so...
Fungus it was.
IDEAS
We’d also established that, currently, the Fungo was only growing on one continent of Kaoso and dormant on the other three, so what was really called for was also a method to ‘re-seed’ those kingdoms as the moon ‘woke up.’
So I came up with these floating seed jellyfish things as a way for that to happen.
After that, I got to work drawing and then coloring the story.
EXECUTION
Which was a ton of fun, something I don’t get to do as often as I’d like, and always hard enough that I feel like an idiot for wanting to do it about half-way through.
Color-wise, I knew I wanted it to take place at sunrise and use a really limited palette, and visually I wanted to integrate Kreska Kaoso sound FX into the art. Which I think worked pretty good and was a lot of fun.
So that’s basically it.
No promises because I’m always busy, but I might just do it again next year.
