Hey Guys! Haven’t done this for minute so I’m pretty excited to share these concepts. If you haven’t already read “The Assessment”, do yourself a favor and check it out before I spoil it with these designs. Valentine De Landro absolutely crushed it on the art and Marissa Louise did the same with her gorgeous colors. Not to mention, the story was heartbreaking and intense. They really brought these characters to life.

Ok so heeeerre we go…
I think the theme of the day is “The Jump Off”. I noticed that saying shows up a lot in this post and what I realized for me is that a lot of my designs come from some sort of jumping off point. Some sort of image or past design that I can start with just to get through all the jitters in the beginning.
Starting off with the couple in this story. The jump was looking through old polo fashion and from there I just started playing dress-up. It was a lot of fun, mixing and matching textiles and seeing what worked. For the dude, I believe a lot of the inspiration for his clothing was inspired off of Ralph type designs. Yeah, I was definitely channelling old Polo Sport type gear and colors and cutting it up, seeing what it would look like in this world of ours. His boots are inpired by the Visvim FBT’s and Moccasin type wear.
Same other-world intent for the baby Bjorn. I designed it so it’s connected to Elsinore’s hood and added a doily pattern to bring it home.
This was really fun. The main note on this was a giant alligator that would carry around this ball that our main character, “The Assessor” would ride in so their was already an idea to play with. The jump was pretty much a brief description and that helps big time. It was such a cool idea, I didn’t go too much beyond it. Only thing I added was mixing a sloth face to the alligator that ended up looking more like a beaver which the Canadian in me was cool with. The gator mouth and teeth still needed to be implemented so that the mechanics of being able to fit that big ball pod in works. Check the notes in the image to get more of an in depth look at Rudolph.
Sometimes I just take an old unused design and work off that, sometimes I just start sketching and hope to get in the zone, or sometimes it’s inspiration from a real world character.
For this High Guard design, the starting point was “GOOGLE”.
I literally type in “Guard”. Scrolling through, I came across the British Guard look and that was the jump off. I channeled the mannerisms and silhouette of the guard and just dissected it until I found a silhouette I liked. From what I remember, I think I took the British guard hat and thought, “what if I brought that hat down just a bit to cover the whole face and added a slit for the eyes”.
I also wanted to maintain the mannerisms of the British Guard so I intended to cover the face to add to the muteness.
So this was the setting of the story. Pretty much, rural town type ish with lots of hills and farmland. With this one, the jump-off was a picture I took of a cool building. I pretty much took that building and again, dissected it, built on it and changed it enough that it had that other-world feel but still maintained some real world aesthetics. Check the original picture and my design below to see what was added and changed.
So for the Assessor, you’re in for treat because thanks to modern day technology we were able to capture the Jump Off in one of our live sketches. Check the the concept and the live vid below.
Sometimes just working on something small snow balls into bigger designs so one trick to starting is just to draw anything, even your signature can lead to greatness.
And that’s that. Hope you enjoyed!
Great post Mike! We don't talk much process while we're cranking this stuff out so it was great to read through how you get from A to B. I love the stuff you put together for this story.
Fuck yeah Rudolph! Tootoe? Two toed? You too toe! It's got toe's too?
